Why Treasure Christ?

by Elijah Layfield

"5For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." (2 Corinthians 4:5-7 ESV).

  • We treasure Christ because of His Divinity—God of very God.  God has created everything for His own glory, including the universe and us.  He created us to glorify Him by enjoying Him.
  • We treasure Christ because of His humanity in humbling himself to come in the form of man, being born of a virgin, living an absolutely perfect life, suffering in the flesh, and obediently going to die on the cross.
  • We treasure Christ because of His power to create a universe, uphold a universe by the word of His might, and perform mighty miracles.
  • We treasure Christ because of His obedience to the Father to keep His covenant, fulfill His law, perform His righteousness, atone for our sin, and impute His own righteousness to the Church.
  • We treasure Christ because of His ministry to speak words of eternal life, to manifest the glory of the Father in His face, to model worship and living, and to send the Holy Spirit to renew us.
  • We treasure Christ because of His death to bear the wrath of God, satisfy the justice of God, atone for the sin of the Church, and destroy the works of the devil.
  • We treasure Christ because of His resurrection to conquer our sin, defeat death, and lead us to heaven.
  • We treasure Christ because of His presence at the Father’s right hand to be a reigning, triumphant King,  an interceding Priest, and an ever-present,  never-forsaking us Savior.
  • We treasure Christ because we see God when we see him, we are made like Him when we behold His glory and we find the fountain for all of our joy in God through Him.
  • We treasure Christ because our value as people made in the image of God, though marred by sin, is found in His making us His own.
  • We treasure Christ because a superior joy in him is the key to severing the love of money, love of consumerism, love of this world, or any suicidal pleasure that keeps us from enjoying Him.
  • We want you to treasure Christ because our joy in Christ will only be completed when we others join us in our praise, adoration, and enjoyment of God through Him.
